Vivid Reflections: Color Transformations and Blue Porch Ceilings

We’ve been able to paint a few houses this month.  YAY!!  The weather has been tricky, but we’re doing our best.  The transformations we’ve seen have been truly remarkable. Two specific houses come to mind right away.  First, we painted a house that went from worn out yellow to modern gray. Second, a dark green house with tan trim was completely reborn using black on the body, white trim, and a turquoise front door.  Talk about a complete change!

Blue Porch Ceilings

This month I’ve also done a few Color Consultations and the idea of a blue porch ceiling has come up more than once.  Springtime will do that to ya, I guess.;).  So, let’s talk about porch ceilings for a second.  Painting your porch ceiling blue is something that I’ve blogged about in the past.  I love a good blue porch ceiling, and let me just say, you don’t have to live in the south to enjoy this trend from way back.

True or False? Reasons Behind the Blue Porch Ceiling

Why a blue porch ceiling?  Long ago, in the south, folks would paint their porch ceilings “haint” blue to ward off evil spirits. What in the world is a “haint”, you ask?  Haints are what southerners called the evil spirits threatening their tranquility and I guess the haints ain’t fond of light blue.

On the east coast, during the Victorian era, folks would paint their porch ceiling light blue because it matched the sky and it would offer the illusion of extended daylight after the sun started to set. Blue ceilings also are said to trick insects and birds into thinking the ceiling is actually the sky so they will build their nests elsewhere.  Whether you’re trying to make your porch ceiling feel like the sky, deterring birds and insects, or warding off evil spirits, painting the porch ceiling is an effective yet sometimes forgotten trick.  Fancy, huh?

In one of the houses we are painting soon, we are actually painting the screened in porch ceiling,  a haint blue. For this, we chose a Sherwin-Williams color: Blue Horizon SW6497.

Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

It’s amazing what color can do.  You might want a complete transformation, or just a refresh, color can make it happen.  Give me a call to schedule a Color Consult (816-500-7759) and I can show you a few tricks I’ve learned over the years.  Now, I’m off to research which colors will transform all the areas of my life.

Unique Painting did a great job with our exterior painting and wood rot repair. We had great communication during the process and they quickly took care of any issues that came up. The house looks great and they were easy to work with. Highly Recommended!
