Deck Design From An Engineer’s Mind

This week I want to introduce you to my husband. He is an engineer.  I know, I know, I’m supposed to talk about outdoor décor, and I’ll get to that, I promise.  But, first, I have to tell you about this engineer I’m married to and his latest project.

You’ve probably met someone who is an engineer.  You may be married to one yourself.  If you have or are, then you will understand what I’m about to say with crystal clarity.  Although there are always exceptions to every rule, engineers, in general, are perfectionists.  They have to be, it’s their job.  So, you will not be surprised when I tell you that my husband has been rebuilding our deck since Mother’s Day.  Every board has to be perfectly placed and secured or a redo is happening.  Did I think he’d be done in one or two weekends?  No way.  I know better.

A couple months after he started building the deck I shopped for a few items to make the space feel more like an extension of our living area, and not just a place to grill burgers and brats.  I wanted it to feel like a comfy outdoor oasis.  I pictured myself sitting on one of our soft cushioned chairs, sunglasses on, mojito in my hand, book in my lap.  Another scenario I had a feature role in was serving a meal to friends at sundown, string lights aglow and wine a flow. To create the scene, I bought an outdoor rug, a few pillows, string lights, a sign, a lantern…It’s all sitting in the corner of the garage waiting to be utilized.

Fast forward 5 months.  The deck is almost finished, the stairs are all that is left to construct in order to complete this masterpiece.  It’s beautiful.  You can see all the love he has put into this project in his attention to each and every detail.   I’m impressed, as I am with all of his completed projects, I just wish we could enjoy it, but enjoying this deck was never meant for us.  As it always does, life happened, and we are moving.  A house we have loved long time happened to become available and we jumped on the opportunity to become its new owners.  Luckily our house sold right away.  The deck, I’m sure, was a terrific selling point.

I know this entry may sound as though I’m unappreciative of my husband’s timeline, but I’m not.  I did not expect this deck to appear in a weekend.  My husband is creative, engineering is creative.  I respect his creativity even if it isn’t expressed the same way I express my creativity.  His mind works differently than mine, and I’m cool with that.  He builds the decks, I decorate them.  So, next year I’ll be ready to tackle a cozy porch scene with some pumpkins, potted kale and cabbages, mums, hay bales, and so on.  Watch out!!  I might even whip out a corn stalk or two.

Thanks for stopping by!  Check in again soon.  You won’t want to miss my take on the Sherwin Williams 2018 Color Palette.  It’s gonna be good!  Today I’m wishing you all the enjoyable things that go along with hanging out on a deck: good company, a nice view, yummy food, great weather, strong drinks, and a trashy book you just can’t put down.

“I can’t say enough great things about Chad and his crew. They were punctual throughout the entire project and very attentive to detail. This is the first time I’ve hired a painter and they far exceeded my expectations.”

Chad and the team did an awesome paint job on the exterior of our house. They also made our interior basement look new again. Can't say enough good things and will use again.
