This week in our psychology of color study, we are taking a closer look at the color white.
Some people don’t consider white to be an actual color. They’re wrong. Light appears colorless or white. Sunlight is white light that is composed of all the colors of the spectrum. A rainbow is proof, a prism is too. White is considered to symbolize innocence, purity, and cleanliness. So, if that’s the case, then why do painters wear white? Ha! Ha! (Just kidding! The painters I know are all innocent, pure, and clean) I kinda knew, but Chad further educated me on the topic not too long ago. Once upon a time, white paint was used by the majority as a house color. Painters started wearing white around that time to give an air of professionalism and cleanliness. It can also get hotter than Satan’s arm pit outside and white is a light color which helps keep the painters cooler. Good info, huh? Now you know.
Moving on to our color of the week. This week I have chosen a Sherwin Williams color: Ice Cube SW6252. I recently helped a client choose this color for their main floor. It has a little bit of a blue undertone, a very cool white, which actually provided some contrast to their brighter white trim. It looks amazing with their navy kitchen island. Whites can be tricky, they all have undertones just like all other colors do, so you can’t just randomly pick a white. I have mentioned before that I love color. White walls aren’t my favorite, but I have a lot of colorful “stuff”. When you have a lot of colorful “stuff”, you need to have a neutral background so your “stuff” can take center stage. A perfect example is shown in the picture below; white walls, colorful “stuff”. See, white is not boring, or plain. Because it contains all the colors, white is actually the most colorful color in the land. So tell me, how does white make you feel?
