The month of October always brings the spooky fun. I have seen so many fantastic decorations while out and about doing consults and visiting with homeowners. My favorites are the ones that involve skeletons in everyday scenes, living their best life. This Halloween I wanted to replicate one that I saw on Pinterest a couple months ago. So, I bought two skeletons at the local Party City. I placed them on the chairs of a bistro set on my front porch and gave them a few accessories: a hat, a scarf, a feather boa. These ladies are having a great time! They’re drinking all the drinks, having some snacks, talking all the trash, and laughing till they pee. I need a night like that every once in a while. Who doesn’t?!!
Do you decorate for Christmas before or after Thanksgiving?
Though fall is my favorite season, decorating seems short lived. I mean, have you been to Target lately, or even Home Depot for that matter? They all have an aisle dedicated to Halloween but across the way is ALL the Christmas stuff, ALREADY!! Can we respect the fall décor just a smidge? I don’t know about you, but I’m a wait till Thanksgiving is over to decorate for Christmas kind of gal. By the time Christmas actually rolls around I am so over all the holiday decorations in every store. They’ve been there for the past 4 months and I have reached burn-out mode.
Decorating For Halloween
I can’t tell retailers when to put out their Christmas décor. What I can do is honor fall by decorating for the current season and let Christmas wait its turn. I can also decorate for Halloween and Fall at the same time. First, I decorate all my spaces for Fall with all the fall things. Then I toss in a few spooky items here and there to set a scary scene. This way, when Halloween is over, I can put away the creepy décor, but I’m still left with a sweet fall display. So, yes, I decorate for fall first, but technically, the first day of fall comes before Halloween, so there’s no disrespect.
Decorating For Fall
I mentioned that I decorate all my spaces for Fall, and I do, but my two favorite areas to decorate for Fall are the front porch and back deck. The crisp fall air makes me want to host family and friends, have gatherings. To get the front porch ready for some fun, fall festivities I use mums, pumpkins and gourds (the uglier the better), and to offer a welcoming glow, lanterns are the perfect addition.
Don’t just limit your fall decorations to indoors or the front porch. I show my back deck or patio a little love too with a small grouping of pumpkins and some mums. Also, incorporating some cozy outdoor pillows and throw blankets to cuddle up with around a warm fire is the best fall scene ever. Throw some hot chocolate or cider in with some s’mores and you have the perfect night.
Remember, with or without the spooky décor you need to love what you see when you pull up to your home, because how you feel when you see the outside of your home sets the tone for how you feel when you’re inside your home. Whether it’s by creating a scary scene on your front porch or pointing out the perfect paint color options, I’ll help you get it right.
